My passion for health and wellness started at a very young age. My first love of sports and self-development was through Taekwondo. I did this sport for 8 years and loved it. I received my 3rd degree black belt and was an instructor for the American Taekwondo Association. There was something so exciting and motivating about a sport that the more effort and training I put in, the more I personally received.
Through Taekwondo I developed some knee pain and started working with a personal trainer to strengthen and support my knee and core. Being a young age I was able to use this training and excel. I was lucky to have met numerous trainers that not only healed me, but taught me a lot about the body and exercise.
I stopped my journey in Taekwondo to work towards my Undergraduate Degree in Business. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but I knew everything was a business and that was a good place to start. During this time, I made myself happy by continuing to study health and exercise. I became certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist.
Being a personal trainer had to be my favorite job, I worked with people to correct their postural and muscular skeletal imbalances to get out of pain. The success stories of people: not needing surgery anymore, being able to garden with no pain, meeting their goals, losing weight, increasing strength and so many more really kept my interest in this field.
While I was attending Colorado State University I decided one day sporadically to try acupuncture for emotional stress and sleep problems that I had been having for months. It worked excellent! I really enjoyed the way I felt after treatments, and went regularly until my symptoms stayed away. I then went every few weeks as needed for maintenance.
One day I went in for acupuncture with a sore throat, as a child I always caught sore throats and there was NEVER any way to ease the pain except a few min when eating a popsicle... I laid on the table with my acupuncture needles and the sore throat decreased. Then the practitioner came in and did an interesting technique where he took a few drops of blood out of my pointer finger and by the time I was in my car after treatment my sore throat was 100% GONE!!
I then decided I wanted to learn acupuncture to help my future children, be able to maintain my health, and avoid the overuse of today's prescriptions. If someone could make my sore throats just disappear with alternative medicine I needed to not only know how, but be able to do this for others.
When I first began schooling as an acupuncturist and herbalist, I had a very severe back injury to my low back (ruptured L4 L5, herniated towards spine, sciatica) I was in so much pain each day driving and sitting in class. But I began using the techniques and points I learned to treat my own back pain. Certain points open the spine, other points decrease inflammation, and some relaxed muscles. I worked twice a week for 8 weeks with an acupuncture teacher of mine, took daily herbal medicine for back pain, and started a twice daily workout program for core strength and was able to go from being in 9/10 pain to pain free. I could now tie my shoes, sneeze, exercise, drive and live a pain free life! Where before I was faced with the only options of being in pain or surgery.
Learning the Art:
My own injuries and background in sports medicine encouraged me to focus my studying on the treatments of athletes, injuries, pain, and preventative medicine.
I was also shocked to learn all the cases that acupuncture could treat, I saw patients in clinic ranging from: shingles, bladder incontinence, cataracts, PTSD, insomnia, hives, allergies, Hashimotos disease, common colds, psoriasis, Chron's disease, irregular menses, infertility... the list goes on and really covers everything!
I was shocked to see how many disorders can EFFECTIVELY be treated by acupuncture. Chinese Medicine is a 3,000 year old medicine with so much research and teachings that it's very beneficial to focus on an area of teaching. In China acupuncture and herbal medicine are used to treat all illnesses that we in the United States would normally go to the doctor or even ER for.
I chose to continue my acupuncture education in sports medicine because of the happiness I get from getting people out of pain, and success rates that athletes have for increasing performance and decreasing injuries.
I travel to San Diego often to complete the Sports Medicine
Acupuncture training which is 300 hours of learning postural assessments, orthopedic tests, acupuncture needle techniques, and corrective exercise to help people recover from injuries and pain. This training has made me extremely successful in treating pain and getting results, it give the patients a very specific and clear diagnosis for the cause of pain and the exercises to do at home gives the patient a way to take care of themselves and recover when you're not in the office for treatment.
I continue to treat and research a wide variety of cases: digestive disorders, allergies, skin diseases, thyroid disorders, and women's health have great success with acupuncture and I'll always continue to treat with traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, and Dietary Therapy.
Every acupuncturist will have their own story how they got into the medicine. But all practitioners are there because it works so well.
